As a Tina Turner celebrity impersonator, Kiesha Wright
has spent many years performing as Tina Turner. As a child Kiesha started
to dance and sing like Tina Turner in her mother’s living room
while watching Tina on TV. She started her celebrity impersonator career
just out of high school and into college while pursuing a degree in
dance and music at Tennessee State, a friend knew of a position dancing
as an Ikette with Tina Turner, Kiesha auditioned and got the job. As
an Ikette she learned Tina Turner's dance moves first hand from Tina
herself. During this time Kiesha met an agent who saw her singing and
playing the organ in a night club. He thought she looked, performed,
and sounded like Tina Turner, he then asked her if she would like to
be a celebrity impersonator or celebrity look a like, and pretty soon
she was on her way to staring in Las Vegas shows as a Tina Turner look
alike.
Kiesha started performing as a celebrity look alike at the Hotel Hilton in Reno, and the Nugget in Sparks, Nevada, her celebrity impersonator performance captivated the media and this led to performing in the Legends in Concert Show based in Las Vegas.
During this time Kiesha never thought that she might possibly perform as a Tina Turner look alike in the Legends in Concert Show; however, she captured the ears of the great producer John Stuart in Las Vegas, who produced the Legends in Concert Show. John Stuart took an interest in Kiesha and found her very talented; he then hired her for The Legends in Concert Show to perform as a Tina Turner celebrity look alike and sound alike impersonator. He explained to Kiesha that the Legends in Concert Show was a live show where she must use her voice to the fullest in order to sound alike the rock and roll legend Tina Turner. With her Creole looks and legs of Tina Kiesha's look alike performance in Legends in Concert, Las Vegas, gained media attention and she soon started to perform as a celebrity look alike around the world from Hong Kong to South Africa and other lands. Kiesha performed as a celebrity impersonator with Legends in Concert, Las Vegas for eight years until she decided to open her wings and depart from the Legends in Concert Show in 1996 to produce her own legend show called Tina Mania. Publicity photo, courtesy Arnold Shaw Archives, University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Tina Turner, born Annie Mae Bullock near Brownsville, TN. Began her singing career as a teenager, by age 18 she joined Ike Turner’s touring show as a backup vocalist. Two years later, Anna Mae Bullock was the star of the show and became the attention grabbing focal point for Ike and his Kings of Rhythm Soul Review. By the time the 60’s came around Ike and Tina topped the charts with “A Fool in Love” and on into the 70’s with “Proud Mary,” a number four hit which became the capstone of Ike and Tina’s Revue. Three years later, frustrated with Ike’s irrational behavior, Tina walked and went solo. As a solo performer she topped the charts in 1984 with “What’s Love Got to Do With It”, and continued recording and touring all through out the 80’s and 90's. Still today Tina Turner performs one of the most successful stage acts in show business. |
